IND vs AFG, 1st T20I, Highlights: Shivam Dube Powers India to Victory by Six Wickets Against Afghanistan

India vs Afghanistan 1st T20I Highlights: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 1st T20I match between India and Afghanistan from IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. The Men in Blue will gear up for their last T20I challenge against Afghanistan before the mega T20 World Cup in June. It’s not a very high-profile series but definitely a crucial one to try different combinations ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma will return to lead the Indian team in T20Is after about 14 months. He has been called back in the T20I set-up in the absence of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya who are recovering from their respective injuries. Batting maestro Virat Kohli has also been included in the T20I squad but will miss the series opener due to personal reasons.

The return of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to T20I cricket follows weeks of speculation about their future in the format. Having last played a T20I together in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup semi-final in Adelaide, their focus shifted towards ODIs and Tests in the 50-over World Cup year of 2023.

India vs Afghanistan, 1st T20I Highlights: Dube fifty guides India to 6-wicket win

Shivam Dube is the Player of the Match for his brilliant all-round display. He starts off by saying that the weather was really cold and he enjoyed the outing and playing at number 4. He further says that he had a bit of pressure on him but was only focusing on doing well for the side. He then talks about the pressure which only lasts for the first 2 or 3 overs in a match after which the instincts take over. He then concludes that Rohit Sharma has backed him well and appreciated the efforts he has put in so far which helped him execute well in this game.

After 11 straight losses in tosses for India across all forms and captains, Rohit Sharma won the toss earlier in the game and chose to bat first against Afghanistan. With a 50-run stand, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz set the stage for the visiting team. It wasn't fast, but they had something to work with. However, they both fell short quickly after, and Afghanistan was only able to get back into the game thanks to a 68-run partnership between Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai. Nabi was very aggressive and struck rapid runs, but they lost wickets quickly again until Najibullah Zadran's cameo brought them within striking distance of 160 runs. Axar Patel was the selection with the ball.
of the three spinners, as he was frugal and claimed two wickets. Arshdeep Singh was unlucky to go without a wicket despite the pacers' excellent bowling, although Shivam Dube and Mukesh Kumar did take some significant wickets. As they approached the chase, India dropped a couple of wickets but never fell below the needed rate, thanks to Dube's batting performance that prevented any last-minute drama.

Although Afghanistan didn't score many runs, they did make a fortunate breakthrough in the opening over. Even when Shubman Gill was removed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman, they were unable to take use of the opportunity. Because the ball was slipping on the deck, the pacers attempted to bowl too many slower deliveries, which defeated the goal of their slower deliveries. While Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled really effectively, players like Naveen-ul-Haq and Mohammad Nabi went for a lot of runs and were unable to balance things up with wickets. They ultimately came up short against a top-tier squad.

17.2: Naveen-ul-Haq to Shivam Dube, SIX! BANG! Straight as an arrow! Naveen-ul-Haq comes from around the wicket and bowls it right in the arc of the southpaw, on a length, on middle, Shivam Dube clears his front leg and lets his long levers do the rest. Swings cleanly and smokes it towards the sightscreen for a maximum. Just 4 runs needed now

It's time for some T20 action again following India's 1-1 Test series stalemate with South Africa. India's final three Twenty20 international matches against Afghanistan begin Monday, with the T20 World Cup just five months away. Following the 2023 ODI World Cup, this will be India's third bilateral T20I series and their first including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma since November 2022. Fans' excitement has suddenly increased owing to the comeback of India's great batsman, Rohit Sharma. While Virat is unavailable for Thursday's match, Rohit's return as India's T20I captain will be the focus of attention.
